Decide what to move and what not to move. Possibly plan a garage sale or
make a donation to a local charity to help lighten your load!
Get estimates from several moving companies or truck rental companies,
depending on how you plan to move. You can choose to have movers pack
everything, or just the large items.
Arrange to have your gas, water, and electric meters read on the day you
leave and have the bills forwarded to your new address. Make arrangements for
any other utilities such as cable TV, telephone, rented water softeners, etc.
for items to either be disconnected or transferred.
Appraise valuable items, such as antiques, art pieces, etc. Decide what
type of liability you are going to need if any for your furniture, etc.
Pack an “arrival kit” of necessities just in case you arrive before the
mover or those items that are necessary to get you started such as cleaning
supplies, paper products, etc.
Arrange transfer of children’s school records if applicable.
Change these addresses: Post office, charge accounts, subscriptions (at
least 4 weeks in advance), relatives and friends, national and alumni
organizations, church, mail order clubs (books, tapes, etc.), firms with which
you have time payments, employer for W-2 forms, banks and lending
institutions, investment companies and brokers, insurance companies, voters’
registration, etc.
LONG DISTANCE MOVES
Ask for professional referrals if available (I.e. doctor, accountant, etc.)
Transfer your bank accounts. They will be happy to open your accounts by
mail.
Contact your local credit bureau to find out if they are on the same system
your new home town subscribes to; if not, they will be able to transfer your
credit file.
Keep a record of expenses incurred during your house-hunting trips. You
will also want to save your moving expense receipts (if the move is
employment-related) for tax deductions.
Save the phone book from your former city residence for tying up loose ends
or for future correspondence.
Check with your attorney about your will if crossing state lines.
Request records from doctors, dentists, and veterinarians; including eye
glass prescriptions, dental x-rays, and vaccinations.
If You Rent Your Present Home/Apartment
Give the necessary written notice to your landlord and make arrangements
for return of any money you have on deposit.
At Your New Home
Make arrangements for gas and electric utilities, telephone, cable TV, and
any rented equipment to be connected or changed to your name.
